Overview

The Histogram is a type of bar charts where bars are intervals of continuous data and the height of the bars represent the frequency for that interval. It can also plot a fitted probability density function that can be used to assess how well the data follows a normal distribution. The Histogram can be used to visualise the distribution of the data.

How to

At the Excel Menu (For Excel 2007, go to Add-ins first)

  1. Choose ProcessMA > Graphs > Histogram

  2. In Variable, select the column containing the data (Numeric)

  3. In Interval, select the column containing user specified interval classes (Optional, Numeric)

  4. Check Plot Normal Curve, if you want to plot normal curve in the histogram

  5. Click OK

Example

You work in manufacturing plant and you need to make sure that the diameter of the parts manufactured is 300mm ± 3mm to meet technical specifications. You want to generate a histogram to visualise the distribution.

  1. Open data worksheet by choosing ProcessMA > Tools > Data

  2. Choose ProcessMA > Graphs > Histogram

  3. In Variable, select D - Diameter

  4. Check Plot Normal Curve

  5. Click OK
