Gantt Chart

The Gantt chart is a type of bar chart used to illustrate a project schedule. It illustrates the start and end dates of tasks and summary tasks, It can also show task dependencies (predecessors) and level of completion status. For larger projects, it is good practice to define the components of the project using the Work Breakdown Structure before using the Gantt chart. This will help to ensure that the necessary activities are documented.

How to construct a Gantt Chart

  1. Determine the target outcome and final deadline for the project.
  2. Identify the list of actions that must be taken to complete the task/project using the Work Breakdown Structure.
  3. List the tasks in sequence and the estimate how long each task will take.
  4. Identify start and end dates for each. Work through the tasks in sequence.
